At least one person was killed and two more injured when the driver of a Lamborghini Gallardo lost control of his car while racing against a Ferrari and crashed into a roadside kiosk in Surabaya on Sunday.
The incident occurred at 5.20 a.m. on Jalan Manyar in the East Java capital's Kertoarjo area, police told local media. The driver, who has been identified as 24-year old Wiyang Lautner, is now in police custody.
Investigators have already questioned Wiyang, who only suffered minor injuries from the shattered glass of his sports car's windscreen, Surabaya Police traffic chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Andre Manuputti told Detik.com.
Wiyang told police that he was trying to overtake his friend's Ferrari when he struck the roadside stall, Andre said.
Wiyang “felt one of his tires lock, so the car steered to the left and hit the food stall and a motorbike,” he said.
The sports car struck down the stall's owner Mujianto, 44, and two customers: Kuswanto, 51, and his wife Srikanti, 41.
Kuswanto took a direct hit, Surabaya police spokesman Adj. Comr. Lily Djafar told Kompas.com, and was even dragged by the Lamborghini for several meters.
He died from his injuries as a result, while the other victims suffered broken legs.
Wiyang has undergone a blood and urine test to reveal whether he had been driving under the influence of drug or alcohol.
Andre said police is also trying to locate the driver of the Ferrari, which was allegedly involved in the street race with Wiyang.
