There certainly seems to be a recurring formula to all of these 'hair pulling' street fights:

One person ineffectually grasping at one or both of the combatants in a half hearted attempt to 'break up' the fight.
One person who drifts in and lands a few sly blows to one of the fighters before sidling away, often returning moments later for a few more jabs.
The remaining crowd stand by either gawking and mumbling or flapping their gangly stick arms like a flock of startled chickens, bellowing slurred and garbled recriminations.

The old way of simply trading blows until one party is knocked square on their arse seems to be a thing of the past.
