I was considering posting a video I found the other day of a young gay kid (probably still in high school) sitting on a walkway wall, calmly being talked to by the videographer who was a black man. The man seemed super-chill and was telling the kid he shouldn't be using the "N" word so casually. The kid snarkily replies something like, "Why not? Anyone can use it. It's a free country." Then the video jump-cuts to the kid huddled on the ground, crying, cowering and shivering, face covered with blood, and the black guy behind the camera shouting (much more angrily): "So anyone can use "n*gger", huh?! HUH!!" I didn't post it here because we don't see the actual beating, just the brutal aftermath, but I felt there was a lesson there about misreading people, and taking their calm, apparently amused demeanor for being passive when inside their blood is boiling, about to explode in violence.
