Pittsburgh Pizza Manager VS Black Woman
The Pittsburgh community is outraged and protesting Pizza Milano after a viral video captured the manager beating the breaks off a Black woman. Jade Martin had missed the bus home after having drinks with a friend at a nearby bar on Friday night. She stopped in to use the bathroom while she waited for the next one. Not only was Martin denied entrance to the restaurant, the manager shoved her against the door frame, threw her into into table, and wrestled her down to the floor. But then things got even worse. Mahmut Yilmaz, 41, climbed on top of Martin to continue his attack and proceeded to slam her head onto the floor repeatedly. Several other restaurant employees came over to assist and forced her to leave the restaurant. When Pittsburgh police arrived, they charged Martin with defiant trespass and disorderly conduct. Yilmaz didn’t get off scott-free though. The video has garnered over 660,000 views and was eventually seen by police. At the time the 34-year-old mother of two was interviewed on Friday, she claimed to be disoriented and very foggy. Martin had to be later treated at Mercy Hospital where she was diagnosed with a concussion. No one had mentioned the assault to the police. After interviewing Yilmaz about what led to his physical attack on Martin, he was arrested and charged with one count of simple assault and one count of aggravated assault. His bail was set at $5,000. Yilmaz insisted that Martin was being “loud and disruptive” and was annoying customers. But no one, including Mayor Bill Peduto, believes that his behavior was justified. “This morning I was made aware of the deeply disturbing video from Milano’s Pizza,” Mayor Peduto said in a statement. “I have worked through the day with Pittsburgh Police leadership and charges have now been quickly brought. I want to thank the community for their assistance in the investigation, and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police for their hard work throughout the day. “It is my sincere hope that these charges are another step in sending a very clear signal that Pittsburgh will not tolerate violence against women and that we will work as a community to protect all women, and notably African American women, from physical and emotional violence.” Over 20 members of the Black community staged a protest in front of Pizza Milano on Saturday evening which helped draw attention to the incident. A second larger protest is scheduled on the Martin Luther King holiday to make sure that justice is served. |
