"Many Romanians were impressed by the sad story of a 66-year-old man who was brutally beaten by two young people in a pedestrian underpass in the central Romania city of Brasov. Thus, many people wanted to help the old man.

The incident occurred at the end of March in downtown Brasov. The surveillance camera in the passage caught the moment when two young people, one aged 18 and the other aged 23, brutally beat the old man for nearly a minute. The images showed that they only stopped hitting him when a security guard appeared, which may be the reason why the old man is still alive. However, he suffered serious injuries, including facial and cervical injuries.

The two young men were placed under preventive arrest, but it’s yet unclear why they beat up the old man. The victim apparently knew one of the aggressors, and the scandal allegedly started because of a sum of money. The two young people told the police they were drunk at that moment and don’t remember anything, according to the local media.

The incident impressed many Romanians, who donated money, clothes and even food for the 66-year-old man. Local doctor Vasi Radulescu was one of those who began raising money for the victim. On Thursday morning, April 5, he announced on his Facebook page that he managed to raise RON 90,000 so far, and that other people offered to pay the man’s rent for a year or even give him a house. Also, several dentists said they could repair his teeth for free.

Romanian writer Irina Binder also got involved in this charitable movement, being among those raising money for the victim.

The old man doesn’t have ID documents and social welfare workers are now helping him to get temporary identity papers. This way, the man can have a bank account opened on his name, where he can receive the money people have donated for him.

According to the local media, the man was working in Brasov, living in difficult conditions on the outskirts of the city."

The old man (age 66) owed them money (I guess that he didn’t pay them for a job they did for him, construction usually). So the young guys chased after him into an underground passage. Then the young guys, one is 18 and the second 24 year old, beat the man unconscious.

The old man and the guys are not from Brasov, they are each from different parts of Romania. Meanwhile the punks got arrested and placed in detention for 30 day, until a judge makes a decision on what happens next. The old man needs 16 to 18 days of recovery. I guess it was a close call, because under the Romanian law, if a person needs more then 20 days of medical care, the sentence is between 3 months to 2 years of jail.
