Re: Hood Fight

Found this interesting on chat gpt.

Why joints are weaker than bone shafts

Anatomy: Joints are made of cartilage, connective tissue, ligaments, and thinner bone ends. There isn’t a continuous dense cortical bone cylinder like in the middle of a phalanx.

Failure point: When enough force is applied, the joint can dislocate, rupture soft tissue, and separate at the capsule. This requires far less force than fracturing a finger bone mid-shaft.

Forensic reality: Most documented cases of human bite amputations occur at joints (like the base of a finger) because the combination of tearing + bite force overwhelms soft tissues.

Force comparison

Human bite (molars): up to ~400–700 N (90–160 lbf).

Disarticulating a finger joint: Experimental studies show that separating small joints (fingers, toes) mechanically often requires ~100–300 N of tensile or shear force, depending on angle and tissue condition—well within human bite capacity if the biter is determined and uses twisting/jerking.

Steak comparison: That’s still harder than biting a tough well-done steak (~20–70 N shear), but not absurdly outside the range. Think of steak × 3–5, plus some tearing.

Practical notes

Clean “bite-off” at a joint is still messy: the skin resists, cartilage crushes, ligaments tear. It’s not like scissors; it’s ripping.

Infection risk is extreme—human mouths carry high bacterial loads, and nearly every clinical report stresses sepsis risk.

Psychological inhibition is normally what prevents it; in cases where it happens (fights, extreme stress, psychosis, intoxication), the person overcomes the natural aversion.

Bottom line:
Biting through the thumb bone itself is nearly impossible. Biting through the joint is gruesome but feasible—about 3–5× harder than a tough steak, but still within human bite strength if paired with tearing and twisting.

if there were "rules" these ppl wouldn't even exist. they are unable to abide by rules.
