Following the assault, McKnight was rushed to the hospital on a stretcher, forcing the court to halt proceedings and reschedule the bond hearing for a later date. Rather than proceeding to a murder trial, new court documents filed on this day revealed that Mecklenburg County District Attorney Spencer B. Merriweather III officially dismissed all murder charges against McKnight due to the self-defense evidence. Prior to the dismissal, Jamariyae’s parents expressed intense frustration, stating that communication with the District Attorney's Office had entirely broken down after the courthouse brawl. Footage revealed McKnight was walking toward his home when he was followed, confronted, and surrounded by a group on multiple sides. The original bond judge compared the group's coordinated movements to a military strategy. Audio captured McKnight repeatedly screaming, “Leave me the fuck alone” before pulling a gun and firing 6 shots. Evidence showed McKnight was trying to distance himself from a gang. Immediately after he fired his weapon, another individual from the surrounding group pulled out a firearm and shot multiple rounds back toward McKnight's home. The specific surveillance and Ring camera footage of the neighborhood confrontation has not been released to the public. |
