Brazilian Congressman Breaks Nose in Street Fight
Brazil, Congressman Renato Freitas (PT-PR) from Paraná was seen exchanging punches and kicks with an unidentified person on the streets of Curitiba, Paraná. In one of the recordings, the congressman appeared kicking a man dressed in black in the leg. Shortly after, he received a punch to the nose, which began to bleed. In another video, the unidentified man and Renato exchanged punches while crossing a pedestrian crosswalk. Bystanders who witnessed the situation broke up the fight. On social media, the congressman reported that he was crossing the street with a friend when a car drove towards them. Upon seeing the driver, he got out of the vehicle and started a fight. The congressman also stated that the man was filming the situation, which, according to him, was an attempt to gain views on the internet. Renato also said that his nose was broken. With over 800,000 followers on Instagram alone, Renato Freitas is a state representative for Paraná, elected by the PT (Workers' Party) in 2022. He was born in the city of Sorocaba, in São Paulo, but was raised in Curitiba. The congressman studied social sciences at UFPF (Federal University of Paraná), but did not finish. Later, he graduated in Law from the same university, where he also earned a master's degree. A researcher in criminal law, criminology, and the sociology of violence, Renato has worked at the Public Defender's Office of the State of Paraná, as a university professor, and as a public interest lawyer. The parliamentarian's main priorities relate to education, public safety, and housing. Before becoming a congressman, Renato was elected city councilman in 2020. During his term, he became the leader of the opposition in the Curitiba City Council. In 2022, the councilman had his mandate revoked by the council after participating in an anti-racist protest on the premises of the Rosário Church in the capital of Paraná. At the time, the demonstration took place after cases of homicide of Black people gained significant national attention. |
