A thug from Coley who knocked a man unconscious for no reason has avoided jail.

Aaron Husbands, 20, was caught on CCTV leaving the Purple Turtle in Gun Street, in Reading town centre, in the early hours of July 17, 2009, and throwing a punch at Graeme Whitty.

Mr Whitty, who was celebrating his birthday, fell to the ground, breaking his jaw and smashing his teeth.

Husbands is seen calmly walking away, to be patted on the back by a friend in a checked shirt. The two then shake hands.

The court was told Mr Whitty had heard Husbands shout “you’ve got three seconds”, not knowing what he meant.

Husbands then said “three, two, one” and hit Mr Whitty, who did not know the defendant.

Rufus Stilgoe, defending Husbands, said: “Previous to this night he had never been much of a drinker and since this night he has not touched a drop of alcohol. He is the primary carer for his five-month-old child.

“On this night he acknowledges he had drunk far more than normal and he does not recall the blow at all, despite watching the harrowing CCTV footage.

“It was totally out of character and he is genuinely remorseful.”

The court heard that Mr Whitty, now 40, needed reconstructive surgery on his jaw and his teeth were still not back to normal.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, he said: “My mouth and my confidence has been wrecked.

I don’t feel able to go out like I used to and I have had to change jobs because I can no longer handle a stressful environment.”

Judge Zoe Smith, sentencing Husbands to a six-month sentence suspended for 18 months, said: “This was a disgusting attack on a complete stranger, bizarrely it seems, totally out of character.

“It seems you had been drinking to excess but the picture I have from all other sources is of a quiet and well-behaved young man. You are reasonably educated and live with your partner and child.”

Husbands, of Pennyroyal Court, admitted one count of wounding on November 30, and was sentenced at Reading Crown Court.

He was ordered to complete 100 hours unpaid work and to pay £300 compensation to Mr Whitty.

You have to look at it from the fat guy's point of view. It's not his fault he's fat and ridiculed. He was simply reacting to how he's been brought up.

They should take the 5 month old son away from him. At least this way the kid will have a chance not to turn out like scum to society like the so called father. Leaving the kid with him is injustice to the child and worse then what's been done.
