A young man fatally stabbed his father in Wilmington, North Carolina, in May 2013 while his sister was on the phone with a 911 dispatcher, according to police and court records.

Officers with the Wilmington Police Department were called to a home on Night Hawk Drive around 6:45 p.m. on May 2, 2013, after a report of a domestic dispute, according to Port City Daily. Christopher Eugene Roberts, 52, had been stabbed in the back with a kitchen knife and was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

During the 911 call, the victim's daughter initially told the dispatcher that her brother had a knife and wanted to kill himself, and said she needed an ambulance, according to WECT. As the situation changed, she told the dispatcher, "I think he stabbed my dad," and asked her to send help immediately.

Corey Eugene Roberts, then 20, was arrested at the scene and charged with first degree murder, according to WWAY News. He was held without bond at the New Hanover County Detention Facility and appeared in court the next morning, where he apologized to the judge while crying, the station reported.

New Hanover County later fired the dispatcher who took the call, Letha Anderson, after a review found she had raised her voice and repeatedly cut the caller off, according to WECT.

In July 2015, Superior Court Judge Marvin Blount found Roberts, by then 23, not guilty of first degree murder by reason of insanity, following a three day hearing in which psychiatric experts for both sides agreed he suffered from a diagnosed mental illness at the time of the killing, according to Port City Daily. Prosecutors had argued Roberts acted out of anger rather than a delusion, the newspaper reported.

Roberts was ordered committed to Central Regional Hospital in Butner, North Carolina, where he is to remain until doctors determine he no longer poses a threat to himself or others, court records show.
