Two Convicted in Santa Ana Nightclub Beating
Kim Pham, a 23-year-old Westminster woman, died after a group punched and kicked her outside The Crosby in downtown Santa Ana, an attack captured on bystander video that led to manslaughter convictions for two women. Pham was attacked just after midnight on Jan. 18, 2014, outside the restaurant and nightclub, according to police and court records. Investigators said Pham and her friends were taking a photo when another woman bumped into the group, setting off a verbal argument that escalated into a fight. Trial testimony indicated Pham threw the first punch before several people set upon her, striking her and kicking her in the head as she lay on the sidewalk. Police said onlookers watched and some recorded the beating on their phones. Pham was left unconscious. A woman who said she had just walked out of the club called 911 as Pham lay on the ground. "There's a fight right here off of Broadway and 4th Street, there's a girl that's unconscious," the caller told the dispatcher, according to a recording released by police. She said both men and women had been hitting the victim and that "everybody just ran off." Pham suffered blunt force trauma to the head and was placed on life support. Her family said she was brain dead, and she was taken off life support on Jan. 21 so her organs could be donated. She was pronounced dead the next day, according to the Orange County coroner's office, which attributed her death to complications from a blunt force head injury. Prosecutors charged Vanesa Zavala and Candace Brito with murder, and a judge ordered them to stand trial after portions of the cellphone video were played at a preliminary hearing. In July 2014, a jury acquitted both women of second-degree murder but convicted them of voluntary manslaughter and assault. A judge sentenced Zavala and Brito in November 2014 to six years each in state prison, ordered them to pay $5,000 apiece in fines and to split $3,500 in funeral costs. The maximum term they had faced was 11 years.
