A towing company owner in Muskogee, Oklahoma, shot a man he found breaking into his business overnight, then held him at gunpoint until police arrived, according to a 911 call the owner placed and local news reports.

Dale Ford, who owns Fast Wrecker, told a dispatcher just before 2:30 a.m. on April 11, 2013, that he had caught a burglar inside his shop. Ford had started sleeping at the business after thieves broke in the week before and made off with about $1,000 worth of car parts.

"I've got him pinned down right now, I've got a gun on him," Ford said on the call. "He's here in my shop."

Ford told the dispatcher the man had kicked in the front door, and that he fired a .22 caliber handgun, hitting the intruder once in the arm. When the man tried to run, Ford said, he ordered him to the floor and kept him there until officers arrived. The man told Ford he had been looking for his brother.

Police identified the man who was shot as Joseph Carpenter, 35, of Muskogee. He was taken to a hospital for treatment and was not arrested at the scene while investigators prepared a report for the district attorney's office.

Carpenter's status changed five days later. Muskogee police said he checked himself out of the hospital against medical advice on the evening of April 15 and was tracked to a motel on South 32nd Street, where officers arrested him. He was booked into the Muskogee County jail on a complaint of second degree burglary.

No charges were filed against Ford over the shooting. Public records reviewed did not show a further disposition of the burglary case against Carpenter.
