An EF-4 tornado killed Kori Bryant, 30, and her 9-week-old daughter, Olivia, outside their Murfreesboro, Tennessee, home on April 10, 2009, while injuring dozens more across Rutherford County.

Authorities said the mother and infant died near Sulphur Springs Road. Paramedics believed they were caught in the open trying to reach a car, with Olivia in a baby carrier. EMS Supervisor Randy White said both were found under debris. Bryant's husband, John, suffered a collapsed lung in the storm.

The tornado, part of a larger Good Friday outbreak across Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia, cut a 23-mile path across Rutherford County. The National Weather Service rated it an EF-4, the second-highest tornado classification, with winds estimated at 170 mph.

The storm carved a half-mile-wide swath through the Highland Park Drive and Tomahawk Trace neighborhoods before continuing toward Lascassas. At least 58 people were injured, several critically, according to emergency officials.

The Rutherford County Emergency Management Agency reported 845 buildings damaged, including 117 destroyed and 298 with major damage, for an estimated $42 million in losses.

The Murfreesboro Police Department's 911 center fielded 487 calls between noon and midnight, roughly 10 times its normal volume. The American Red Cross opened a shelter at New Vision Baptist Church for displaced residents, and Tennessee's governor toured the damaged neighborhoods in the days that followed.
