Two teenagers called 911 from a moving SUV on the afternoon of Nov. 5, 2007, reporting that an armed ex-boyfriend was chasing them through southeast Colorado Springs, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department. Within minutes the pursuit ended in gunfire that left the 18-year-old driver dead and a 16-year-old passenger critically wounded.

The call came in about 1:18 p.m. Callers Jeremy Vasquez, 16, and Caleb Moore, 15, told dispatchers that 17-year-old Andrew Brown was behind them, had shown a shotgun and had rammed the back of their vehicle, police said.

The confrontation grew out of a breakup, according to investigators. Brown had dated 16-year-old Tiffany Howard, who had recently ended the relationship. Howard called Vasquez earlier that afternoon and asked to be picked up from Doherty High School because she was worried about Brown, police said. A group of friends collected her in an SUV driven by Michael Fisher, an 18-year-old Wasson High School student.

Brown followed the SUV south on Murray Boulevard, police said. As the vehicle neared Crestline Drive, Brown pulled alongside and fired, striking Vasquez in the head. Fisher stopped and the teenagers scrambled out. Brown made a U-turn, parked and opened fire again, and Fisher was hit and died at the scene, according to the police account.

Brown then turned a shotgun on himself as the first officer arrived and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Vasquez was flown to a Denver hospital in critical condition. Howard was beaten but her injuries were not considered life-threatening, and two other teenagers in the vehicle were not hurt.

The El Paso County coroner's office ruled that Fisher died of multiple gunshot wounds and classified his death a homicide, while Brown's death was ruled a suicide. Police said Brown had taken two shotguns from his family's home before the pursuit.
