An 18-year-old landscaper from southern Indiana died of heat stroke after working outdoors near Louisville, with a body temperature that reached 110 degrees, the Jefferson County coroner's office said.

Cody Johns of Sellersburg, Ind., had been helping his stepfather with landscaping work at the Brownsboro Glen subdivision in northeastern Jefferson County on July 21, 2011, when he became disoriented in the heat sometime after 4 p.m., deputy coroner Eddie Robinson said.

Johns was taken to a Norton Immediate Care Center at Westport Village, and what happened there became the subject of conflicting accounts. His stepfather told the coroner that staff never treated the teenager and that he had to call 911 himself, according to the coroner's office.

Norton Healthcare disputed that version. Chief medical officer Dr. Steve Hester said Johns never entered the clinic and that only the stepfather came inside to describe the symptoms. A physician determined the illness appeared to be heat related and that a hospital emergency room, rather than an immediate care center that does not administer IV fluids, would be better equipped to treat him, the company said. "In no way did we not care for this patient," Hester said.

Emergency crews reached the clinic within about eight minutes. Firefighters with Lyndon Fire and Rescue found Johns outside and began aggressive cooling, packing ice around his neck and under his arms. "He was very, very hot to the touch," Capt. Richard Bliven said.

Louisville Metro EMS took Johns to Norton Suburban Hospital, where he was treated for more than an hour before he was pronounced dead at 7:20 p.m., according to the coroner's office. Robinson said the death was consistent with hyperthermia.

Johns's family declined to comment. The death came during a stretch of record heat across the Ohio Valley in the summer of 2011.
