A 15-year-old boy hid under the sheets of his mother's bed and stayed on the phone with a 911 dispatcher while a burglar broke in and searched his family's home in Valinda, California, in January 2012, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and news reports at the time.

The teenager, who was homeschooled and alone at the house, called for help around 11 a.m. on Jan. 11 after he heard glass shatter, authorities said. Deputies said the intruder had used a screwdriver to break a window to get inside the home on the 16800 block of Lawnwood Street, near La Puente.

The boy told the dispatcher that the man was getting closer and at one point whispered, "He's coming," according to accounts of the call. The dispatcher told him to stay quiet and hide, and the boy pulled sheets and pillows over himself and kept reporting what he heard in a low voice. Deputies said the burglar walked through the same room where the boy was hiding.

Patrol deputies arrived while the man was still inside. When they reached the front door, he answered and claimed to live there, authorities said. Because the boy had remained on the line and described what was happening, deputies knew the man was not the resident and took him into custody.

The Sheriff's Department identified the suspect as Aurelio Hernandez, 42, of Valinda. He was booked on suspicion of burglary and held on $50,000 bail, authorities said. Investigators said he might be linked to other break-ins in the area.

The boy's family said he had stayed calm during the ordeal, and he recorded part of what happened on his cellphone, according to news reports.
