A 17-year-old girl arranged the knife attack that killed her adoptive father and left her mother with 26 stab wounds, plotting with her boyfriend and a second young man to have her parents killed in their Yale, Michigan, home, according to court records and news accounts of the case.

Paul Skinner, 47, was stabbed 23 times and died of his wounds after two masked intruders climbed through a first-floor window of the family's home shortly after midnight on Nov. 12, 2010, prosecutors said. His wife, Mara Skinner, 44, was stabbed 26 times but survived. Investigators said their daughter, Tia Skinner, had left the window open and positioned a ladder outside so the attackers could get in.

Mara Skinner called 911 as the couple bled, telling a dispatcher, "We're bleeding really bad," according to recordings later played at trial. The couple's son, Jeff, took the phone and said someone had come in and stabbed both of his parents. Tia Skinner also spoke with dispatchers, saying she had stayed in the basement and heard screaming from upstairs.

Prosecutors said Tia Skinner had become angry after her parents forbade her from seeing her boyfriend, Jonathan Kurtz, and took away her cellphone. Text messages presented at trial showed the three planning the attack and discussing how to kill the couple "in the quietest way possible," authorities said. Investigators said Skinner had drawn a map marking her parents' bedroom.

Tia Skinner, Kurtz and James Preston, both 18 at the time, were each convicted in 2011 of first-degree murder, attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder. All three were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Because Skinner was 17 at the time of the crime, her sentence was reviewed several times after U.S. Supreme Court decisions barred mandatory life-without-parole terms for juveniles. Judges reimposed the no-parole sentence at each hearing, and in 2018 the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that a judge, not a jury, decides whether a juvenile may be sentenced to life without parole. Skinner has remained ineligible for release and is held at the Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility in Ypsilanti.

Kurtz is incarcerated at the Baraga Correctional Facility in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and Preston at the Muskegon Correctional Facility, according to state corrections records.
