Teen Calls 911 on Her Drunk-Driving Mother

A 15-year-old girl riding in her mother's car called 911 to report that her mother was driving drunk on an Iowa highway, and the woman was arrested minutes later with a blood-alcohol reading nearly three times the state limit, according to a Johnson County criminal complaint.

Lori Anne Becicka, 47, of Oxford, was taken into custody the night of March 15, 2012, after her daughter told a dispatcher that her mother was "impaired" behind the wheel and had been drinking while she drove, according to The Smoking Gun, which posted the complaint.

The girl said her mother "was even consuming while driving with her in the car," the complaint stated. The Gazette of Cedar Rapids reported that the teenager placed the call at her father's request.

Becicka drove off Highway 6 and into the parking lot of Don Hummer Trucking in Oxford, where a Johnson County sheriff's deputy was waiting, the complaint said. Deputy Matt Hendricks reported that she smelled heavily of alcohol, had slurred speech and bloodshot, watery eyes, and that open containers of alcohol were in the vehicle.

Becicka admitted drinking and failed a series of field sobriety tests, according to the complaint. A breath test put her blood-alcohol content at .235, nearly three times Iowa's .08 limit.

She was charged with operating while intoxicated, child endangerment and resisting arrest, all misdemeanors, and was booked into the Johnson County Jail, where she was held on a $5,000 cash-only bond, according to the complaint and news accounts.
