A 20-year-old University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee student was shot and killed and a second man was critically wounded in the parking lot of a Sheboygan, Wisconsin, Walmart early on Jan. 8, 2012, in a confrontation a jury later found was not self-defense.

Sheboygan police were called to the Walmart Supercenter on South Taylor Drive at about 12:30 a.m. and found two men with gunshot wounds, according to news accounts of the case. Pheng Lee, a business student who had come home to Sheboygan from Milwaukee for winter break, had been shot in the chest and later died at St. Nicholas Hospital. Chenglung Moua, 21, of Sheboygan, was shot in the face and flown to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa in critical condition.

According to police, Lee and three friends had stopped at the store for snacks when they were confronted in the lot by Kou Yang, 21, of Sheboygan. Yang and Moua exchanged words, investigators said, before Yang opened fire on the group. The wounded man was able to identify the shooter, and officers arrested Yang later that morning at a home on 10th Street.

Prosecutors charged Yang with one count of first-degree intentional homicide in Lee's death and three counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide for firing on his companions. Court records showed Yang had prior convictions for violent offenses between 2007 and 2010.

At trial, Yang argued that he had fired in self-defense. "It was never my intention to have this occur," he told the court, according to FOX6 News. "But I felt my wife and myself were in imminent danger." Jurors rejected the claim and convicted him on July 19, 2012.

On Sept. 24, 2012, a Sheboygan County judge sentenced Yang to 18 years in prison followed by 12 years of extended supervision. Prosecutors had recommended 27 years of confinement. Lee's family said he had hoped to finish his degree and open a business.
