A 27-year-old man shot and killed his father and brother and wounded his mother during a family argument at their Dalton, Georgia, home in April 2012, then fled before deputies caught up with him hours later, authorities said.

The gunfire broke out shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 29, at a house on Dude Street, according to the Dalton Police Department. Neighbors reported hearing shots, and the wounded mother, 50-year-old Deborah Canales, walked to a neighbor's house with a bullet wound in her back. The neighbor called 911 and stayed with her until an ambulance arrived.

Officers who entered the home found Emilio Canales Sr., 50, and his son Emilio Francisco Canales, 31, dead of gunshot wounds, police said. Deborah Canales was taken to a hospital and underwent surgery. She survived.

Police spokesman Bruce Frazier called the shooting "a domestic dispute of some sort" but said investigators were not certain what had set it off. A Whitfield County sheriff's deputy arrested the couple's other son, Emilio Christopher Canales, that afternoon.

Canales, a convicted felon, was charged with two counts of murder and one count of aggravated assault. Court records showed he had been jailed in August 2011 for violating parole on earlier charges of aggravated assault and giving false information to police.

In July 2013, Canales pleaded guilty to two counts of murder along with aggravated assault and firearms charges, according to the Dalton Daily Citizen. Superior Court Judge William Boyett first imposed life in prison without parole, then revised the sentence after a later hearing to two consecutive life terms plus 25 years, requiring Canales to serve at least 60 years before any parole review. District Attorney Bert Poston said the killings were carried out in "cold blood" and told the court that Canales had gotten gang tattoos while in jail.

The recording of the neighbor's 911 call was later posted online. At the sentencing, Deborah Canales called out to her son from the courtroom, "I love you honey, with all my heart."
