ShotSpotter Response and Fatal Shooting on 26th Street

On October 23, 2020, Officers Roberto Gomez and Casimir Janus, 10th District tactical officers assigned to Beat 1065B, were on routine patrol near 24th Street and Hamlin Avenue. They heard multiple gunshots, followed by a ShotSpotter notification for shots fired in the area.

Soon after, their attention was drawn to a silver Ford Focus driving away from the area. The officers activated their emergency equipment and followed it southbound in the alley between Ridgeway and Hamlin Avenues toward 26th Street. The Ford Focus exited the alley, struck a pickup truck, then crashed into a pole at the mouth of the alley on the south side of 26th Street.

A female civilian got out of the front passenger seat and ran southbound in the alley. The driver got out with a revolver in his hand and ran eastbound on the south sidewalk of 26th Street. Officer Gomez pursued him on foot and unsuccessfully tried to grab him. As the driver continued to flee, Officer Gomez fired three times, striking him in the upper left buttock and posterior right arm.

The driver fell to the ground and dropped the revolver into the street. Paramedics transported him to a hospital by ambulance, where he died.

A male civilian remained in the rear passenger seat of the Ford Focus and was apprehended by Officer Janus after a brief struggle. A black semiautomatic firearm in slide-lock was recovered from the floorboard behind the driver's seat. The revolver the driver possessed was recovered from the street near his body.

The occupants of the vehicle were reported as involved in a drive-by shooting in which a male was grazed in the head and arm, recorded under RD No. JD408676.
