ShotSpotter Call Leads to Fatal Shooting of Adam Toledo
On March 29, 2021, at 2 a.m., Officers Eric Stillman and Corina Gallegos were on routine patrol when they were notified of a ShotSpotter call near 2358 S. Sawyer Ave. They responded and saw Adam Toledo, later learned to be 13, and a 21-year-old man in the alley between Sawyer and Spaulding. The officers approached, and both ran south in the alley. Stillman and Gallegos got out and chased them on foot without notifying OEMC. Gallegos apprehended the 21-year-old, who immediately fell to the ground. Stillman chased Adam Toledo and ordered him to show his hands. Stillman saw a dark-colored pistol in Adam Toledo's right hand while his back was turned. Adam Toledo then tossed the weapon alongside a wood fence and began turning toward Stillman with his hands raised. Stillman fired one shot, striking Adam Toledo in the left side of the chest. Adam Toledo fell to the ground. Stillman holstered his weapon and rendered aid. Adam Toledo died on the scene. A black semi-automatic pistol was later found next to the wood fence, several feet from where he fell.
