Shotgun Fired Through Front Door Kills Sleeping Girl, 5
A 5-year-old girl was killed and her father wounded when a gunman fired a shotgun through the front door of their West Ashley home early on Oct. 25, 2011, according to the Charleston County Sheriff's Office. More than a decade later, no one has been charged in the child's death. Allison Griffor was asleep in a bedroom she shared with her two brothers on Pierpont Avenue when someone knocked at the door around 1 a.m., investigators said. As her father, William Griffor, walked to answer, the shotgun was fired through the door. Buckshot tore through an interior wall and struck the sleeping girl in the head, deputies said. Family members called 911, and Allison was taken to the Medical University of South Carolina, where she died two days later. Her father survived his wounds. Investigators have said they do not believe Allison was the intended target. Detectives think the people responsible mistakenly believed drugs were kept at the house, according to the sheriff's office. Her mother, Jennifer Griffor, was among the family members home at the time. The case drew renewed attention in June 2015, when Shyrome Johnson was charged with obstruction of justice. According to an arrest affidavit, Johnson was found near the scene minutes after the shooting and told detectives in November 2011 that he knew nothing about it, then acknowledged in 2014 that he had lied and had been in a vehicle near the home. Johnson, held on $200,000 bond, gave investigators the names of three people he suspected in the killing but was never charged in the shooting itself, the affidavit said. Several people have been named as persons of interest over the years, but the sheriff's office has said none of the leads produced enough evidence to support a murder charge. Detectives have periodically renewed their appeal for information, including on anniversaries of the shooting. As of 2025, the killing remained unsolved. The Charleston County Sheriff's Office has continued to ask anyone with information to contact its cold case detectives or Crime Stoppers.
