A Maricopa County jury convicted Scottsdale real estate broker Andre Michael Leteve of murdering his two young sons, and he was sentenced to death on each count on Dec. 19, 2012.

Leteve, then 39, called 911 himself on the morning of March 31, 2010, and told a dispatcher he had killed the boys and then tried to kill himself. He had shot himself under the chin, and the bullet exited through his nose, leaving him hard to understand on the phone.

According to the Arizona Supreme Court's later account of the call, the operator believed Leteve said he had shot one son, age 15, when he was saying he had shot his sons, ages 1 and 5. She relayed the wrong information to responding officers.

Police found 5-year-old Alec Leteve on a couch downstairs and 15-month-old Asher Leteve in a crib upstairs, roughly 100 feet apart. Each had been shot through a pillow or blanket, and the state's high court later found that both boys were apparently asleep. Leteve was bleeding heavily from his face and, handcuffed at the scene, repeated to officers that he had shot his children. Asked why, he answered, "I don't know."

Court records show his wife, Laurie Leteve, had moved out of the home in August 2009 and filed for divorce that October. Leteve bought the handgun the same day she filed. Prosecutors said he killed the boys to retaliate against her and pointed to notes he left behind, one of which ended, "Enjoy the rest of your life without us." The state also presented evidence that he was carrying heavy debt and had almost nothing left in his bank account.

The jury convicted Leteve of two counts of first degree murder and found three aggravating factors: that the killings were especially heinous or depraved, that he committed multiple homicides on the same occasion, and that both victims were under 15. His lawyers argued he had acted impulsively, and their mitigation case included bipolar disorder, alcoholism, untreated mental illness and the collapse of his marriage and his finances.

Reviewing the case on automatic appeal, the Arizona Supreme Court agreed in August 2015 that the trial judge should not have excluded some of that evidence, but called the error harmless in light of what it described as overwhelming proof of premeditation. It affirmed both convictions and both death sentences.
