A 26-year-old Colorado woman whose baby was cut from her womb -- and later died -- managed to lock herself inside the alleged attacker's basement and tell a 911 dispatcher she is "bleeding out."

"She cut me," Michelle Wilkins told the dispatcher -- her voice at times faint and incoherent -- according to the Denver Post, which obtained an audio recording of the emergency call made Wednesday morning from a home in Longmont, Colo.

The woman, who was nearly eight months pregnant, had responded to a Craigslist ad for baby clothes when she was allegedly attacked by 34-year-old Dynel Lane inside Lane's home.

I misread. Ok the lady is alive but the baby died. So glad she made it!

A Colorado woman has been jailed for 100 years after a jury convicted her for stabbing a pregnant woman and removing her eight-month-old foetus, which did not survive.

Prosecutors said the woman, Dynel Lane, 36, was obsessed with having a baby and concocted elaborate lies to convince those close to her she was pregnant.

Lane lured Michelle Wilkins, 27, to her home through a Craigslist ad for maternity clothes.

In its closing arguments the prosecution told the court how Lane had hit Ms Wilkins over the head with a glass bottle, stabbed her in the neck with a shard of the broken glass and put her hand over her mouth until she lost consciousness.

In February, Lane was found guilty of attempted first-degree murder, assault, and unlawful termination of a pregnancy after the jury deliberated for about six hours.

The case has reignited a highly charged debate playing out in the US over whether a foetus can legally be considered a human being.

District attorney Stan Garnett said he could not charge Lane with murder over the death of the unborn child because a coroner had found no evidence the foetus lived outside of the womb.

After the hearing Ms Wilkins spoke to reporters, saying “I do not hate Dynel, but I am angry for all the pain she caused”.

Ms Wilkins also said the verdict was a “triumph of justice”.
