A pregnant Winter Garden, Florida, mother survived being shot as she escaped a three-day armed home invasion in November 2009, after four armed men held her family hostage and forced her to withdraw nearly $24,000, according to police and court testimony.

The men fired a shot through the front door of the family's home in the gated Lake Roberts Landing neighborhood on a Sunday morning, then bound Rubens Morais, his wife, Marcela Borges, and their 5-year-old autistic son, Ryan, with duct tape, police said. Morais later testified the intruders had obtained the family's financial records through a local travel agency that handled his trucking business.

Police said the family was blindfolded and driven in their own SUV to Apopka, about 13 miles away, where they were held overnight. Over the next two days, the intruders took roughly $30,000 from a safe in the home and forced Borges, who was two months pregnant, to withdraw nearly $24,000 from a Bank of America branch. Morais testified that one of the men held a gun to his son's head and repeatedly pulled the trigger on an empty chamber.

On the third day, Borges freed her hands and jumped backward out a second-story window with her feet still bound, landing between two air conditioning units, then ran for a neighbor's house. One intruder shot her in the back as she fled, and a second round shattered her wrist. The neighbor called 911.

Investigators arrested Oscar Diaz-Hernandez, 19, of Orlando, and cousins Miguel Diaz Santiz, 25, and Victor Manuel Sanchez, 20, both of Apopka, in the days that followed. All three were charged with attempted murder, kidnapping and home invasion robbery. Police said a fourth suspect, Bianca Dos Santos, whose mother owned the travel agency, had planned the crime but was never found at the scene.

Sanchez was convicted at trial in February 2012, and Santiz entered a no contest plea to nine of eleven counts. Both were sentenced to life in prison that May and ordered to pay restitution. Diaz-Hernandez attempted suicide in the Orange County Jail three months before his scheduled trial and was left in a persistent vegetative state; prosecutors dropped all 11 charges against him in April 2013 after doctors said he would never recover.

Dos Santos, a Bolivian national, has never been arrested. Investigators believe she fled the country, and outstanding warrants for kidnapping, armed robbery and aggravated assault remain against her.
