A Michigan man known to neighbors as "the Preacher" fatally shot his wife and adult son at their rural property in April 2013 before authorities found him dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the home, according to police.

Marcia Faye Hoover, 62, called 911 from the family's land in Lilley Township, Newaygo County, around 1:45 p.m. on April 10, telling dispatchers her husband, Charles "Mark" Hoover, had shot their 37-year-old son. Deputies arriving at the property off West 17 Mile Road found Marcia and her son, Charles "Isaac" Hoover, dead outside the house from gunshot wounds, according to authorities.

Not knowing whether the elder Hoover, 59, was still armed inside, investigators sent in a robot to clear the house room by room. Around 9:30 p.m., roughly eight hours after the 911 call, officers located him dead inside, of what police described as an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Fox 17 in Grand Rapids later obtained Marcia Hoover's 911 recording through a public records request. In it, she can be heard telling dispatchers her son had already been shot and that she believed her husband was coming after her next, the station reported. Fox 17 said the roughly one-minute call was too disturbing to air in full.

Neighbors described Charles Hoover Sr. as deeply religious and consumed by preparations for the end of the world, holding regular Bible studies in a small chapel on the property. The family also let homeless people stay in spare buildings on the land, according to people who knew them. Marcia was remembered as warm and helpful, while Isaac Hoover was described as a devoted father of two young daughters. Hoover had a decades-old criminal record that included a riot charge from 1972 in Wexford County and a later marijuana possession case, but acquaintances said they never suspected him of violence.

No criminal case followed, since the only suspect in the shootings died at the scene. Isaac Hoover, survived by his wife, Stacy, and daughters Rylee and Charlee, was buried later that month at Blythefield Memory Gardens near Grand Rapids following services at Resurrection Life Church in Grandville.
