On March 24, 1998, a shocking act of violence erupted at Westside Middle School in Jonesboro, Arkansas, when two students, Mitchell Johnson, 13, and Andrew Golden, 11, opened fire on their classmates and teachers. This tragic event, which resulted in the deaths of four students and a teacher and left ten others wounded, remains one of the most disturbing examples of school violence in American history.

According to police reports, on the morning of the attack, Golden pulled the school's fire alarm, causing students and staff to evacuate into the line of fire, where Johnson was waiting. Armed with an array of weapons, the pair then began shooting, leading to multiple fatalities and injuries.

The young age of the shooters posed a challenge for the legal system. Both were tried as juveniles and found guilty of five counts of murder and ten counts of battery. Under Arkansas law, they were sentenced to confinement until they turned 21 years old.

The community of Jonesboro grappled with the aftermath of the shooting, with families and the town at large mourning the irreplaceable loss. The incident not only left a lasting scar on the community but also sparked national debates on issues such as school safety, gun control, and how the justice system handles juvenile offenders.

Johnson and Golden were released upon turning 21. Johnson faced further legal troubles, while Golden, who had changed his name to Drew Grant, was killed in a car crash in 2019.
