A 47-year-old Phoenix widow shot and wounded Michael Lewis after he broke into her home near 67th Avenue and Indian School Road on May 6, 2014, police and news accounts said.

The woman was home alone when she heard someone force open a sliding glass door, Phoenix police said. She retreated to a bathroom closet with a .38 caliber revolver her late husband had taught her to use and stayed on the phone with a 911 dispatcher as the intruder moved through the house.

Police said Lewis, then 20, found the woman's hiding spot. A struggle followed, and she fired one shot, wounding him. Lewis could be heard on the recording asking what had happened and apologizing repeatedly.

Investigators said afterward that the homeowner had done everything right, from calling 911 to arming herself and staying hidden until Lewis located her. Police determined the shooting was legally justified, and the homeowner was not charged.

Lewis spent about a month in the hospital recovering from the gunshot wound before he was arraigned in June 2014 on charges of second degree burglary and aggravated assault. He pleaded guilty to both counts.

Lewis was scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 15, 2014, around the same time the recording of the 911 call was made public and drew national attention.
