A Monroe County judge sentenced Sandra Arena, a 48-year-old Penfield, New York, hairdresser, to five to 15 years in prison for driving her car into a crowd outside a Rochester bar, killing Chad Coleman, 22, of Greece, New York, and injuring four women.

Judge Frank Geraci found Arena guilty of second-degree manslaughter and four counts of third-degree assault after a non-jury trial, according to court records and news accounts. He acquitted her of second-degree murder after prosecutors argued Arena showed "depraved indifference to human life"; Geraci said he viewed the act as reckless rather than intentional.

The attack happened shortly before 2 a.m. on Aug. 13, 2008, outside Nasty D's Bar & Grill on Alexander Street, according to police. A fight inside the bar spilled into the parking lot, where a man punched Arena and then attacked her friend, Toni Dalesandro, then 21.

Arena testified she drove toward the group of about 10 people to help Dalesandro and did not intend to hurt anyone. Witnesses said Coleman was pinned beneath Arena's car as she spun her wheels trying to back away.

A neighbor who ran to the scene, identified in news reports as Karen Anne Bills, said she swung an ax through the windshield trying to make Arena stop. Coleman, a 2003 graduate of Olympia High School, died from his injuries; Dalesandro and two other women were also hurt.

A 911 call placed from across the street as the crash unfolded runs nearly 10 minutes, with the caller relaying updates to dispatchers and helping account for how many people had been struck, according to a recording of the call.
