A 911 call at 3:22 p.m. on October 19, 2024 reported smoke coming from a residence on Woodland Avenue in the Browns Mills section of Pemberton Township, New Jersey. The Pemberton Township Volunteer Fire Department and Pemberton Township police officers responded.

Responding officers received information that an individual with a firearm was in the back yard. The man was later identified as Marvin Taylor, 57, of Browns Mills.

Officers positioned themselves in the woods-lined area behind the residence's backyard and gave verbal commands for Mr. Taylor to drop the weapon. Mr. Taylor exchanged gunfire with Officer Kyle McQueen of the Pemberton Township Police Department and was struck.

Officers rendered first aid. Mr. Taylor was flown to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where he was pronounced deceased at 5:36 p.m. A firearm was recovered near him after he was shot. No officers or other civilians were injured.
