Anthony Meyers, 19, was sentenced to 30 years in prison after a Winnebago County jury convicted him of first-degree reckless homicide for fatally stabbing Shon Potschaider during a fight inside an Oshkosh, Wisconsin, home on April 9, 2009.

The fight began over a cigarette at the home Meyers' mother, Amy Meyers, shared with Potschaider, according to court records. Amy Meyers called 911 as the fight broke out.

Police said the two men wrestled before Meyers went to the kitchen for a knife, then swung it at Potschaider several times, striking him from the shoulder to the chest and waist, according to court documents. Meyers called 911 after the stabbing and stayed on the line with dispatchers until officers arrived.

Potschaider, 35, was pronounced dead at Aurora Medical Center. Prosecutors initially charged Meyers with first-degree intentional homicide, and he was held on $300,000 cash bond, according to the criminal complaint.

At trial, Meyers argued he acted in self-defense after Potschaider punched him. The jury rejected that claim and convicted him of the lesser charge.
