Officers Return Fire Near 70 E. Lake Street
On August 10, 2020, around 4 a.m., 15 Chicago police members from the Critical Incident Response Team were patrolling downtown in five vehicles because of looting in the area. After turning west onto Lake Street from Michigan Avenue, officers saw a group on Lake Street between Michigan and Wabash Avenues. One person was carrying a cash register and moving north toward Garland Court. As officers tried to apprehend that person, they heard gunfire from the east on Lake Street. Officers saw muzzle flashes from the front passenger side of a dark-colored sedan as it turned south onto Michigan Avenue. A sergeant and two officers returned fire. The person or people firing at officers drove away south on Michigan Avenue while continuing to fire. CPD vehicle No. 9580 had bullet damage to the rear window, and a bullet fragment was recovered from the center of the passenger compartment partition. A bullet hole was also found in a seventh-floor window of a nearby building.
