This audio is from a Nov. 6, 2023 incident at 7326 S Dante Ave. Third District tactical officers were driving east on 74th Street around 11 a.m. when they saw a man walking in the street on the 7300 block of S Dante Ave.

Sergeant Erik Ruhnke turned north onto S Dante Ave because the man appeared to resemble someone the tactical team was looking for. As he got closer, Sgt. Ruhnke realized the man was not that person, but directed officers to stop him for jaywalking.

Officers Charles Villanova and Carlos Gutierrez got out to conduct an investigatory stop. Officer Gutierrez ordered the man to stop. The man ran and grabbed toward his waistband. As Officer Gutierrez tried to detain him, the man fired a gun and struck Officer Villanova.

Sgt. Ruhnke, Officer Christopher Schickel, and Officer Villanova fired their weapons. The man was fatally shot.

Body-worn camera violations were sustained against Officer Gutierrez for failing to record the entire incident, and against Sgt. Ruhnke, Officer Villanova, and Officer Schickel for failing to timely activate their cameras. The allegation that Officer Gutierrez seized the man without justification was exonerated. The firearm discharges by Sgt. Ruhnke, Officer Villanova, and Officer Schickel were within Chicago Police Department policy.
