Officer Fires at Reported Stolen Jeep Near 4950 S Lake Shore Dr
On August 29, 2020, around 10 a.m., Chicago police were sent to a Jeep that had been reported stolen moments earlier near 4950 S Lake Shore Dr. Officer Gabriel Rodriguez and other officers tried to detain the people inside. As Officer Rodriguez approached on foot, he reportedly saw the passenger lean toward the floorboard as if to retrieve something. The Jeep then struck Officer Rodriguez and continued driving. Officer Rodriguez ran after the Jeep and reportedly saw the front passenger turn with his arms extended and pointed toward the rear of the Jeep. Fearing he or his partners would be shot, Officer Rodriguez fired four times toward the fleeing Jeep. The Jeep left the area and was later recovered. It had bullet damage, but there was no indication anyone was struck by Officer Rodriguez's gunfire. The weapon-discharge allegation against Officer Rodriguez was not sustained. Allegations that he prematurely deactivated his body-worn camera, and that other involved officers failed to record the entire incident, were sustained.
