An off-duty Miami-Dade police detective who was robbed and shot in the chest outside a Miami church in 2012 managed to dial 911 himself and describe the men who attacked him, according to Miami-Dade police.

Detective Wislyn Joseph, a veteran of about 10 years, had been doing volunteer work at Union Baptist Church in the Liberty City area on the evening of Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, when three men confronted him at gunpoint, police said. The men demanded his gold jewelry, including a chain his grandmother had given him, according to his later testimony.

One of the men shot Joseph in the chest with a .45-caliber pistol at close range, police said. Despite the wound, the detective called 911 on his own and gave a description of the attackers. He was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital and released the same day.

Within a day, detectives arrested Willie Barney, 19, Dedrick Brown, 20, and Travares Santiago, 20, according to police. Investigators identified Barney as the gunman and charged all three with robbery and attempted murder. They were ordered held without bond. Police said the men were tied to a string of robberies across the county, including one in which Barrington Kerr was fatally shot in his Miami Gardens yard.

At Barney's trial in April 2013, a jury convicted him of attempted first-degree murder and robbery but found that he had not personally carried a firearm, a finding that capped his exposure at 45 years, according to news accounts. Circuit Judge Jorge Rodriguez-Chomat later granted a new trial after acknowledging an error in jury selection.

Joseph testified again at the retrial the following month, breaking down as he recalled the attack, according to CBS Miami. "He didn't have to shoot me," Joseph said of the gunman. "I gave him all I had." A jury again convicted Barney of attempted murder and robbery, according to news accounts.

The recording of Joseph's 911 call was later released by authorities.
