Mother Decapitates Toddler, Confesses on 911
Chevonne Thomas called 911 shortly after midnight on Aug. 22, 2012, to report that something had happened to her 2-year-old son. Within a call that ran about six minutes she admitted killing the boy, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office. Thomas, 33, first told the dispatcher that her boyfriend was responsible, then reversed herself. 'You know what, I did it, I'm lying, I'm lying, I'm lying, I did it,' she said, according to a recording of the call released by authorities. She also said she took the antidepressant Prozac, telling the dispatcher, 'I didn't take it today, but I should have.' Officers reached the rowhouse on the 1400 block of Kaighn Avenue at about 12:30 a.m. Prosecutors said Thomas fatally stabbed herself in the throat roughly five minutes into the call, just before police entered through a second-story window. Jason Laughlin, a spokesman for the prosecutor's office, said officers found the body of the boy, Zahree Thomas, on the first floor and the child's head in a freezer. Thomas had regained custody of her son on April 3, 2012, the New Jersey Department of Children and Families said. She had lost custody twice before, in November 2010 and July 2011, in cases involving marijuana and PCP. The department said it had an open case and was providing therapeutic reunification services, counseling, medication monitoring and substance abuse treatment. Toxicology results forwarded to the prosecutor's office on Dec. 3, 2012, showed Thomas had smoked marijuana laced with PCP, a hallucinogenic drug. The Department of Children and Families said it would conduct a review of its history with the family. Child welfare advocates questioned whether the agency had adequately assessed the home before returning the boy to his mother. ·
