Victims ![]() ![]() Tracy Burke-----Karen Comer Police arrest suspect in Rineyville double murders RINEYVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) -- State police say they have charged a Fort Campbell soldier with a double murder in central Kentucky. Kentucky State Police Trooper Steve Pavey says 29-year-old Brent Burke is charged with killing his estranged wife, 31-year-old Tracy Burke and her former mother-in-law, 53-year-old Karen Comer, while three children were inside the home. WAVE 3 Investigator Janelle MacDonald reports. ![]() The two women were found dead in a home in Rineyville on Sept. 11th a 9-year-old boy called 911, saying he heard gunfire the night before. Burke is a military police officer at Fort Campbell, a sprawling Army post on the Kentucky-Tennessee border, but he's now a suspect in the double murdered. Pavey says Burke has been under close supervision since the murders. "Fort Campbell pretty much had him on lockdown. He couldn't leave. They wasn't worried about him escaping or getting away." Although Burke did talk with investigators after his arrest on Monday, they won't reveal what he said. Police admit their case is circumstantial, but say it's still strong. "Investigators sat down with Chris Shaw, the Commonwealth Attorney," Pavey said. "They looked at all the evidence, they made a determination through the totality of this evidence they felt like they had enough evidence to make an arrest and go forward with this case." Police did collect physical evidence from the murder scene, but are still waiting on test results on some of it, so their case could become even stronger. As for a motive, police say the couple's bitter divorce and Tracy's allegations that she was afraid of her husband could be factors. Burke is charged with two counts of murder, three counts of wanton endangerment, one count of burglary and one count of animal cruelty -- for allegedly shooting one of the family's dogs the night of the murders. The murder trial of an Ursa native has been set. Brent Burke is an Army Soldier at Fort Campbell in Kentucky. He's accused of murdering his soon to be ex-wife and her former mother in law on September eleventh of last year. KHQA has learned Burke will stand trial January seventh of next year. He's currently in jail on a two million dollar bond in Kentucky. |

Women found guilty of giving alibi to Mendon native CLARKSVILLE, Ky. -- Two Clarksville women have been convicted by a federal jury in Paducah of lying to federal agents who were investigating a Mendon, Ill., soldier suspected in a double murder. Michelle L. Lovelace, 36, and Lindsey A. Brooks, 22, were both employees of the Fort Campbell Emergency Communication Center at the time. They were on trial for making false and fictitious statements about Sgt. Brent Burke, a Mendon native, according to a news release from U.S. Attorney David L. Huber of the Western District of Kentucky. The jury's verdict of guilty was returned late Thursday afternoon after a day-and-a-half trial before U.S. District Judge Thomas B. Russell. According to a witness at the trial, Lovelace and Brooks were asked by the suspect to lie to special agents with the U.S. Department of Defense Criminal Investigative Service. Court records indicate the women told agents they were with the suspect in a parking lot near the Emergency Communication Center on the day of the murders. Both Lovelace and Brooks knew their statements were false and would give an alibi for Burke, the release stated. Kentucky State Police charged Burke with killing his estranged wife, Tracy Burke, and her mother-in-law from a previous marriage, Karen D. Comer, at Comer's home in Rineyville, Ky. Mrs. Burke's 9-year-old son from another marriage called 911 the next day to report the killings. Rineyville, near Elizabethtown, is about a 2 1/2-hour drive from Fort Campbell. If convicted, Lovelace and Brooks could serve a maximum sentence of five years in prison, pay a $250,000 fine and be under supervised release for three years. There is no parole in the federal system. The women are scheduled for sentencing at noon July 9 in Paducah. |
