Four college students kidnapped at gunpoint near the Morehouse College campus in Atlanta on April 25, 2010, were rescued after one called for help from the trunk as the gunmen drove toward a bank ATM.

Three armed men approached the group outside the Collegetown apartment complex, a block west of campus, as the four were returning from church, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The men put guns to their heads and took a Buick LaCrosse, cell phones and jewelry. Two students were ordered into the trunk, while the other two were kept in the passenger compartment with the attackers.

One of the men in the trunk kept his phone. He worked the trunk's emergency release far enough to see the street, determined the car was in the West End and called 911 several times, the Georgia Voice reported. He then reached the Morehouse College police department, where a dispatcher relayed the location to Atlanta police.

Officers from Morehouse and Clark Atlanta University reached a Wachovia branch at about the same time as the car. Jevontay Fleetwood, 17, and a juvenile were arrested at the scene. Darius Hill, 19, ran and was arrested May 4. Fleetwood and Hill were charged with armed robbery, carjacking and kidnapping and held without bond in the Fulton County jail.

Morehouse police Chief Vernon Worthy said one of the students had been put on hold by 911. Atlanta police disputed that. Sgt. Curtis Davenport said the first call, at 5:16 p.m., was answered in four seconds and ran about 30 seconds before the connection dropped. Two more calls came in after 5:17 and 5:18 p.m., and the callers hung up before an operator picked up. Davenport said an operator could hear a victim talking in the background but could not get the information needed to send help. Morehouse police notified Atlanta police at 5:21:24 p.m., and officers reached the scene four minutes later.

Three of the four men were Morehouse students. The fourth attended American InterContinental University. Their names were withheld at their request. The students told the Georgia Voice that the gunmen used anti-gay slurs during the robbery. Atlanta police said they were not aware of any report of slurs.

Steven Jones, the Fulton County assistant district attorney assigned as Zone 1 community prosecutor, said in September 2012 that the men who took the students had been caught, tried and convicted. The available coverage does not record how the case against each defendant was resolved individually.
