Kathleen Aceto of Merritt Island was found not guilty by reason of insanity on Jan. 26, 2011, in a shooting inside a neighbor's home, according to Brevard County court records.

Aceto was acquitted on two counts of aggravated assault with a firearm and one count of armed burglary of a dwelling. Prosecutors had dropped the remaining four counts, including two counts of attempted first-degree murder, in March 2010. The docket lists no conviction in the case.

The shooting happened on the morning of Feb. 12, 2010. The Brevard County Sheriff's Office said Aceto, then 47, walked from her home about a block away on Monitor Street, went inside a neighbor's house and began firing.

The homeowner grabbed a gun and fired back, the sheriff's office said. His wife, a teenager and a small child were in the house at the time. No one was hurt. Aceto ran from the property, jumped a fence and hid before walking off down the street, neighbors told WFTV. Deputies arrested her a short distance away.

In the homeowner's 911 call, made while Aceto was still somewhere outside the house, he tells the dispatcher he is armed, says he does not know where she is and swears repeatedly as the dispatcher tries to get his name. "We're going to kill her," he says at one point. "She's going to die." The dispatcher tells him to lower his weapon before deputies reach the house. "Put your weapons down," she says. "Deputies are outside, do not shoot one of my deputies."

Deputies said Aceto told them she was a messenger from God. Investigators who searched her house afterward reported finding handwritten letters filled with profanity and a list that included thousands of gallons of bleach, WFTV reported. She was initially held without bail and ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation at the county jail.

Neighbors said Aceto had moved to the street the previous November and had become friendly with the Martin family, whose home she later entered. "I don't have any idea, because they all pal around together," neighbor Don Watson told WFTV when asked what had led to the shooting.
