Re: Man Stops Traffic on Freeway to Shoot Her

911 Calls including call made from man watching events before the chase and by woman who was shot before the chase.

State Police have confirmed that Russel Carter was the APD officer who fatally shot the man who led police on a high-speed chase in a yellow mustang on I-40.

He is an active SWAT officer and has been with APD for around 15 years. The man who was killed was identified as Gary Atencio, 45, of Albuquerque.

State Police are conducting an investigation into the shooting.

Wednesday wasn’t the first time Carter has been involved in a shooting outside his jurisdiction.

In February 2005, he was one of seven officers from various departments who fired shots at 59-year-old John Loche in McIntosh, N.M.

Loche, who was killed, had barricaded himself inside his home after Torrance County Sheriff’s deputies had tried to serve an eviction notice on him. The sheriff’s department had requested back-up from APD and other agencies, which is not uncommon, after Loche began shooting at them.

And in June 2007, Carter and another APD SWAT officer shot and killed 42-year-old Jay Martin Murphy after Murphy barricaded himself inside his Albuquerque home with his teenage daughter.

Police said at the time that Murphy had a knife and had thrown bottles at officers.

Listen to the 911 tape from yesterday’s chase below.

A man driving this yellow Mustang opened fire on a female motorist and her passenger on Albuquerque’s West Side on Wednesday. He then led police on a high-speed chase.

State Police Lt. Robert McDonald said in an email to the Journal at 11:35 a.m. that investigators still haven’t interviewed the APD officer involved in yesterday’s shooting.

McDonald also said the Office of the Medical Investigator has yet to identify the man shot by the officer
