Robin Miranda, 22, of Watsonville, California, was shot and killed by police on June 7, 2011, after he cut the locks off a shotgun inside a Big 5 Sporting Goods store, loaded it and opened fire on employees and customers, according to news reports. No customers or employees were hit.

Miranda had been at the same store in the Pajaro Plaza shopping center earlier that morning, filling out paperwork to buy a rifle and ammunition before he was turned away under California's waiting period, the Santa Cruz Sentinel reported. He returned just after 11 a.m. carrying a bicycle cable and an electric saw.

He used the cable to chain the front doors shut, then walked to the gun department, police said. After failing to saw a lock off a handgun, he cut the security locks off a shotgun, loaded it and began firing seemingly at random. Witnesses told reporters they counted six or seven shots.

Two employees hid while the store manager barricaded herself in a back office and called 911. In the recording, which police later released, an employee can be heard reciting Hail Marys as gunfire continues in the background.

Officers who responded had to squeeze through the cable-locked doors to get inside, according to NBC Bay Area. Following active-shooter protocol, they moved toward the gunman and ordered him to drop the weapon. When he refused, Officer Zane Ota and Detective Donny Thul fired a combined five rounds, striking Miranda twice, police said.

Medics performed CPR, but Miranda was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers or bystanders were injured. Watsonville police, who said Miranda was a former local high school wrestler, did not release a motive.
