Man Reports His Truck Stolen, Then Reports the Shooting
A New Year's Eve report of a stolen truck in rural Greeleyville was followed a short time later by a second 911 call in which the caller told a dispatcher he had shot the man, according to Williamsburg County deputies. Investigators charged Paul Gregory Baker, 41, with murder in the death of 54-year-old Daniel J. McCarty. Deputies said Baker called 911 twice around the time of the shooting on Dec. 31, 2010, WBTW-TV reported. In the first call, according to investigators, Baker said he had been assaulted and that someone had taken his truck. In the second call, deputies said, he reported that the man had come back and that he shot him. Officers who responded found McCarty's body in the road in front of Baker's home, deputies told the station. Greeleyville is a small town in Williamsburg County, in rural eastern South Carolina. Baker was arrested that Friday and booked into the Williamsburg County jail on a murder charge, deputies said. Authorities did not say what led to the confrontation or whether the two men knew each other, and it was not clear whether Baker had retained an attorney. A recording said to capture a 911 call from the shooting was later posted to a public dispatch-audio archive. The recording runs about eight minutes. ·
