A Greensboro, North Carolina, man who opened fire on a police officer and then held off authorities for roughly 15 hours from inside his home was later found not guilty by reason of insanity, according to police and local news reports.

The standoff began about 5 a.m. on Jan. 31, 2012, in the city's Lindley Park neighborhood after a neighbor called police to report a man sitting on his porch and "calling out to God," according to news accounts. When officers reached the Westdale Place home, Jimmy Burleson fired at Greensboro Officer C. Stevens and retreated inside, police said.

No one was struck. Burleson fired at an officer and damaged a police car during the confrontation, police said. About a dozen neighboring houses were evacuated as the standoff stretched through the day.

Roughly 25 High Point officers, a special response team and a K-9 unit assisted Greensboro police, according to reports. Officers fired tear gas into the house and sent in a robot to check the interior.

Shortly before 8 p.m., Burleson walked outside nude and sat in a chair on the front porch, reports said. The standoff ended when a police dog bit him and officers took him into custody.

Burleson was charged with attempted first-degree murder, damage to personal property and discharging a firearm into occupied property, according to court records.

A judge in Guilford County Superior Court later found Burleson, 42, not guilty by reason of insanity, and he was not tried on the attempted murder charge, local news reported in 2013. He had been held at Central Regional Hospital in Butner since his arrest and was ordered to remain there until mental health professionals determine he is not a danger to himself or others.
