The Volusia County (Fla.) Sheriff's Office said one of its dispatchers acted properly in declining to send deputies after a Daytona Beach man called 911 for help talking his 79-year-old father out of going into a sweltering attic, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reported in June 2011.

The son called around midday and asked whether deputies could persuade the elderly man not to climb into the attic to do chores in the summer heat, according to the sheriff's office. The dispatcher declined to send a unit.

About two hours later, the man collapsed inside the attic. Firefighters had to cut a hole in the roof to reach him and pull him out, the newspaper reported. He was taken to a hospital, where he recovered.

The sheriff's office reviewed the call and concluded the dispatcher had handled it correctly. Spokesman Gary Davidson said it is not law enforcement's job to talk someone out of doing something that is not against the law.

Davidson said an exception might apply if the person involved had a psychiatric condition, according to the News-Journal. The man and his son were not publicly identified.

The recording released with the report is the son's 911 call as he tries to get deputies sent to the house.
