A Connecticut man dialed 911 to complain that a delicatessen had made his sandwich order wrong, according to police recordings and news reports from June 2012.

The caller identified himself on the tape as Rother McLennon. He told the dispatcher he had asked for "little turkey, little ham, a lot of cheese and a lot of mayonnaise" at the Grateful Deli in East Hartford and that the staff were "giving me a hard time," according to CBS News, which put the length of the recording at about two minutes and 23 seconds.

"You're calling 911 because you don't like the way they're making your sandwich?" the dispatcher asked, according to the recording. After McLennon confirmed that he was, the dispatcher told him, "So then don't buy it," and later added, "In the future, just don't buy the sandwich, OK?" The dispatcher instructed him to wait outside for an officer.

The deli's account differed. Owner Tila Azinheira told reporters that McLennon had phoned in an order for 14 sandwiches, that the shop made them to his specifications, and that he then refused to pay, according to NBC Connecticut and Fox News. Because the sandwiches were special orders, the business said it could not take them back.

Police did not file charges, according to NBC Connecticut. Azinheira said McLennon telephoned the deli the next day to apologize and told the shop he planned to return as a customer.

The recording circulated widely after it was released, drawing coverage from TIME, CBS News and Fox News, which cited it among examples of non-emergency calls to the 911 system.
