A Hy-Vee grocery store employee was shot and killed by Boone, Iowa police on Monday after he ran through the store with a knife and shouted that he had HIV, according to police and a witness.

Officers were sent to the Hy-Vee Food Store at Eighth and Benton streets at about 10:50 a.m. on a report of an employee armed with a knife, Boone Police Chief Bill Skare told reporters. "The officers responded and there was an officer-involved shooting," Skare said. The employee was killed.

Skare declined to release the man's name or age, the number of officers who fired, or the number of shots. Asked whether the employee had been disgruntled, he said it was too early in the investigation to answer.

Jane Lundholm of Urbandale, who was working in the store that day for a company resetting the frozen-food doors, said she looked up to see the man running down an aisle and yelling, "I have HIV! I have HIV!" She described him as a man in his mid-20s with dirty blond hair and a zippered sweatshirt.

Lundholm said the man moved from the dairy aisle toward the frozen foods, pulling merchandise off the shelves as store workers tried to stop him. She said she saw two officers trying to take him into custody and then heard shots. Lundholm said she did not see a knife, and that the man's face "looked like he was out of it, like he was in another zone."

About 25 employees gave their names and phone numbers to Boone County sheriff's deputies for statements, and the store closed for the rest of the day. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation arrived shortly after noon to assist the Boone Police Department, Skare said. The Boone County Sheriff's Office, Boone Fire Department and county emergency management also responded.
