On September 19, 2021, at about 11 a.m., Officer Brandon Rambert and Officer Jose Roman were dispatched to a domestic disturbance involving a person with a knife near 6500 South Harvard Avenue.

A woman had called 911 and requested police because her boyfriend physically battered her at her apartment. When the officers arrived, she said he struck her about the face and body and threatened her with a knife. She said he was somewhere in the back rooms of the apartment and was armed with a knife.

When the officers tried to speak with him, he approached them with a knife in his hand. He ignored repeated commands to drop the knife and demanded that the officers leave the apartment.

The officers retreated to the landing just outside the open front door. He continued to approach while holding the knife in his left hand and appeared to reach for the door with his right hand, possibly to shut it.

Fearing for the safety of the woman and the officers, Officer Rambert fired three times, fatally striking him.
