Americo DeCiantis Jr. was sentenced to 28 to 50 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the January 2010 shooting death of his 72-year-old mother-in-law inside her Brighton Township, Michigan, home.

Louise DeRosia was killed on the afternoon of Jan. 25, 2010, at her home in the 5400 block of Lawnwood Drive, in the Larkins Road Estates subdivision off Larkins Road near Interstate 96. According to Michigan State Police and court testimony, DeCiantis then drove to Macomb County and dumped her wallet and cellphone outside a fast-food restaurant in an apparent attempt to make the killing look like a robbery.

A 911 call reporting that her wallet and phone had turned up in a parking lot more than 40 miles from her house, and that she wasn't answering her door, led officers to her body the next day. She had been shot in the head.

Detective Sgt. Sean Furlong testified that DeCiantis, then 62, retrieved a .38-caliber revolver from his car and shot DeRosia multiple times after she told him he was "not good enough" for her daughter Linda, DeCiantis' wife. The revolver was never recovered.

Investigators said DeCiantis ransacked DeRosia's home after the shooting, then took her wallet and phone and went tuxedo shopping with his son before leaving her belongings in the parking lot of a White Castle restaurant in Eastpointe.

DeCiantis, of Madison Heights, was arrested about six weeks after the killing and arraigned on charges of open murder, larceny and felony firearm possession. A Livingston County judge ordered him to stand trial following a preliminary hearing.

In March 2011, DeCiantis was sentenced at age 63. Under Michigan's Offender Tracking Information System, he has an earliest release date in 2040, meaning he will be in his 90s before he is eligible for parole.
