Jersey City Family Dies After Address Mix-up
Four members of one family died in an early morning Jersey City row house fire after firefighters were first sent to the wrong street in a mix-up between two similar addresses, city officials said. The dead were identified as Bishop William Pickett and his wife, Eula Mae Pickett, both 81, and their two adult sons, Thomas Pickett, 55, and Curtis Pickett, 51, according to CBS News. The fire started just before 1 a.m. at 28 1/2 Grant Avenue and spread through a row of wood frame homes. Neighbors called 911 as the flames took hold. "It's 28 Grant. We need somebody to come over here now," one caller told a dispatcher, according to recordings later released. Another said, "It's an elderly man inside. Please hurry up." The first engines were sent to "27 Grand Street," an address nearly three miles away, according to CBS News and NBC New York. The dispatcher did not confirm whether the caller meant Grant Avenue or Grand Street, and the mistake went uncorrected for more than three minutes. Mayor Steven Fulop said crews reached the scene in about seven minutes, roughly double the usual response time, and some residents said the wait felt far longer. "It's literally an example of where one second in either direction could have had a different outcome," Fulop said, according to CBS News. He added that it was not clear whether a faster arrival would have changed what happened to the family. The blaze grew to four alarms and damaged several homes on Grant Avenue, with the most heavily burned expected to be demolished. The Red Cross helped 37 displaced residents, and one firefighter was treated for minor electrical shocks, according to NBC New York. CBS News reported the fire was electrical in origin. Fulop said the city would review how the address error happened and weigh renaming some of its similarly named streets. The audio posted here is fire department radio traffic recorded during the response.
